Fishermen in delta districts stay away from sea

The Hindu

Fishermen across the delta districts have refrained from venturing into the sea due to continued rough sea conditions, despite moderate to no rainfall in the region. On Saturday morning, Fisheries Department officials visited all fishing villages in Karaikal, Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam, issuing warnings to community leaders about rough seas ahead of Cyclone Fengal, which crossed the coast on Saturday. In Nagapattinam, 500 mechanised boats and 3,500 fibre boats from 25 villages are docked, while in Mayiladuthurai’s Sirkazhi taluk, 400 mechanised boats and 1,000 fibre boats from 20 villages — including Thirumullaivoyal, Pazhayar, Tharangambadi, and Poompuhar — remain onshore. A total of 200 mechanised boats and 1,000 fibre boats from 13 fishing villages in Karaikal have stayed docked.
