Dreams and Despair: How Punjab’s Illegal Migrants Risk All on the Dunki Route

Published : Mar 07, 2025 17:47 IST - 9 MINS READ Jaspal Singh, 33, a resident of the nondescript town of Fatehgarh Churian in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, had long dreamt of moving to the US, even if it meant taking the risky and illicit “dunki” route. “After the benefits of the Green Revolution began to wane in the early 1990s, successive State governments have struggled to create remunerative job opportunities,” said Ranjit Singh Ghuman, former Professor of Eminence at the Punjab School of Economics, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. “The problem of illegal migration is neither unique to Punjab nor recent,” said the author and former State Information Commissioner Khushwant Singh. “To achieve higher growth rates and create additional employment opportunities, Punjab must significantly increase its gross domestic capital formation rate,” he said.
