Meet Justice UU Lalit, next in line to become Chief Justice of India
India TodayJustice UU Lalit is set to become the next Chief Justice of India after CJI NV Ramana recommended his name to the Union law ministry. Justice Lalit will become the second CJI who would be directly elevated to the apex court bench from the Bar. Last year, a bench led by Justice Lalit had reversed the Bombay High Court's controversial 'skin to skin contact' ruling. In July this year, Justice Lalit led a bench had sentenced fugitive tycoon Vijay Mallya to four months in jail in a contempt of court case. In another important judgment, a bench headed by Justice Lalit had ruled that the erstwhile royal family of Travancore has the management right over the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Kerala, one of the richest temples, holding that the rule of heritability must get attached to a right of Shebait of the temple.
