Halloween 2024: Some people might find my hobby “morbid.” I find it incredibly soothing.
SlateDrivers passing the old country cemetery on Woodlawn Road must’ve found the sight strange: a bright yellow bicycle leaning against the fence, a picnic basket placed in the overgrown grass, and a teenage girl with her nose deep in a book. While Halloween movies like Hocus Pocus or horror flicks like Frankenstein or Pet Sematary portrayed cemeteries creepily, I’ve always shied away from watching those films and instead admired the splendor of cemeteries as portrayed in Steel Magnolias or Fried Green Tomatoes. Together, we’ve held hands as we traversed the Pére-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, several cemeteries sprinkled through Belgium, and the De Nieuwe Ooster in Amsterdam, leaving our bikes leaning on the fence. We’ve toured historic cemeteries in New Orleans, Savannah, Charleston, and various other cities, learning the past of a given city’s people as we enjoyed the loveliness of the day.
