Q&A: what does Huawei do and how hard is it to remove its 5G kit?
The TelegraphThe Government confirmed on Tuesday that it is banning Huawei from its next-generation telecoms network and stripping out all its existing infrastructure, following years of wrangling over the decision. Just six months ago, the Government set a 35pc cap on the amount of Huawei 5G and fibre equipment that operators could use in their networks, and said its kit could not be used in the "core" part of the next-generation network. However, new US sanctions on Huawei have meant the Government has revisited that decision, and today took a tougher stance, demanding operators stop buying Huawei equipment by the end of the year and strip it out their existing infrastructure by 2027. It comes despite growing warnings from operators, with BT this week saying it would be "impossible" to remove all the kit within a short period and Vodafone saying it would cost “single-figure billions”.
