Why Rams safety Jordan Fuller has opened training camp with the green dot — and why he might keep it
New York TimesIRVINE, Calif. — The flash of green on the back of second-year Rams safety Jordan Fuller’s helmet was so small, it looked at first like a trick of the bright southern California afternoon light. “It’s dope,” said Fuller, smiling widely when speaking with The Athletic after Wednesday’s practice — the first of training camp. “It’s more of a leadership role for him this year,” star defensive tackle Aaron Donald said Wednesday afternoon, a grin creeping across his face. He earned that himself for what he did on the football field last year.” In 2020, under defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, safety John Johnson — lauded throughout the locker room and personnel departments for his communication ability — earned the “green dot” role and soon became one of the more underrated players in the league because of the way he negotiated the defensive traffic and how he communicated calls in a secondary that often did things like rotate into its true coverage post-snap instead of pre-snap, pattern-matched against receivers and heavily favored nickel and dime sub packages.
