Japan's helping hand: Shinzo Abe's legacy
India TodayOn August 28, Japan’s prime minister Shinzo Abe announced that he would be stepping down for health reasons, but that he would continue in his post until a successor is appointed, likely by the end of this month. The two countries are also major security partners—the Abe-Modi friendship saw Japan signing a nuclear cooperation deal with India, despite New Delhi not being a signatory to either the NPT or the CTBT. On September 3, the Japan government had incentivised Japanese firms looking to relocate manufacturing facilities out of China and into India, along with ASEAN countries and Bangladesh. Earlier, on September 1, India and Japan, along with Australia, had also signed a tripartite agreement to ‘initiate supply chain resilience initiatives’ in the Indo-Pacific region. On September 3, media reports said that Japan’s ministry of economy, trade and industry had amended its list of relocation destinations for which Japanese firms seeking to move manufacturing facilities out of China would get subsidies, adding India and Bangladesh to the list.
