This pioneering music program has Western Sydney primary school students playing alongside world-class musicians
ABCIn the Australian Chamber Orchestra's Neilson auditorium in Sydney's Walsh Bay, a flock of primary school children is chittering excitedly in the wings. She has been learning the instrument for the past five years as part of an in-class music program at St Marys North Public School in Sydney's West. The biggest roadblock to scaling the program is not resourcing, says Dr Collins, it's "the leap that the school has to take". This year's NAPLAN results show that a third of Australian school students are failing to meet minimum standards for numeracy and literacy and one in 10 "need additional support". For the pair of them, learning music through the Foundations program has been "life-changing", and Lachlan says he wants other kids to have the opportunity to learn too.
