Labour-linked investors attempt to gatecrash sale of The Observer

The Telegraph

A group of wealthy Labour figures is attempting to gatecrash the sale of The Observer by mounting a rival bid. The Telegraph has learnt that a consortium of investors has written to the board of Guardian Media Group to express their interest in tabling an offer for the Sunday newspaper. The identities of the investors is not yet clear, though one possible backer is Labour donor and green energy tycoon Dale Vince. However, a source close to the tycoon said he had a lot of respect for The Observer, describing it as an “important newspaper”. The source added: “He says there needs to be media plurality.” One person familiar with the approach said the investors, who are being represented by a London law firm, were concerned about plans to sell The Observer to Tortoise Media, a loss-making startup run by former BBC News boss James Harding.
