Iftar: The politics of breaking bread in Bihar
India TodayIn Bihar’s election year, even an iftar dinner transcends its culinary origins to become a meticulously calculated political manoeuvre, wherein every plate served is a bid for votes and every gathering a stage for high-stakes symbolism. On March 23, when chief minister Nitish Kumar hosted his Daawat-e-Iftar at 1, Anne Marg, his official residence in Patna, it was neither the only political iftar in Bihar that evening nor the most crowded one. Despite a few missing from Nitish’s table, the guest list boasted of heavyweights: governor Arif Mohammad Khan, BJP leader and deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary and other political luminaries, all smiling for the cameras as they spooned phirni. Lalu Prasad Yadav, the wily veteran of Bihar’s political chessboard, announced his own Iftar Dawat the very next evening, on March 24.
