Why Edu's return to Arsenal could be their best summer signing
Amid all the hand-wringing and low-balling that has defined Arsenal’s transfer window so far, it should not be forgotten that the most important arrival in north London this summer will not be Wilfried Zaha or Kieran Tierney or William Saliba or any of the far-fetched names that have peppered the gossip columns in recent weeks. When it comes to the club’s medium and long-term prospects, there will be no signing more significant than Edu Gaspar, the former midfielder who has been announced as the club’s new technical director. It is no dramatisation to say that Edu is the man from Arsenal’s past who has been tasked with bringing the club into a new era and shaping its future. In short, Edu’s responsibilities will be to define and implement the club’s footballing philosophy, manage the promotion and development of their best academy players, know the strengths and weaknesses of the first team in excruciating depth and, on top of all that, lead the club’s recruitment efforts in the transfer market.
