Fifteen years after the first film starring Nicolas Cage was released, producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Collider that development on a TV adaptation is taking place, along with the previously announced third National Treasure film. The one for theatrical would be the same cast.” Despite the third film having been in the works for years, Bruckheimer confirmed that the TV show was likely to be released first, explaining: “The film version is being written right now. We have a pilot script done and an outline of the future episodes.” The first National Treasure film grossed more than $347m when it was released in 2004 and was a massive success for Disney, who produced the franchise. The original film followed Cage’s character Benjamin Franklin Gates, a historian who uses a map on the back of the Declaration of Independence to hunt for missing treasure.
