Black Widow director Cate Shortland on her 'courtship' with Scarlett Johansson, landing a Marvel blockbuster — and making it her own

It took a decade and a six-month worldwide search for the perfect director for Scarlett Johansson to get a stand-alone film for her Avenger, Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow. 'It was like a courtship, really' Speaking about the process on the eve of Black Widow's Australian release, Shortland says "It was like a courtship, really". Speaking to Jason Di Rosso in 2017 about Berlin Syndrome Shortland said: "I just love the internal landscape of women's minds." In considering whether to take on Black Widow, Shortland says, "I spoke to the producers, and we all talked about heart and emotion, and what the character deserved."
