Why Modi and Mamata are silent on the attack on Hindu temples in Bangladesh
India TodayIn a strange silence, neither the Prime Minister Narendra Modi nor the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has uttered a word on the recent attacks on Hindu temples in Bangladesh. However, no word of condemnation was heard from the Trinamool Congress in Bengal except for a stray tweet from general secretary Kunal Ghosh blaming the prime minister for being a mute spectator and not taking any effective action to build confidence among the minority Hindus in Bangladesh. There are no indications from the national leadership because they don’t want to burn bridges with Bangladesh or its prime minister, who has helped cement bilateral ties between the two countries. Moreover, since Bengal shares 2,217 km long border with Bangladesh, any off-the-cuff remark could prove detrimental to communal harmony in the state, especially since some of the districts have a minority population of 50-60 per cent.
