Trinamool MP's 'President's Rule' attack on BJP over Maha Kumbh stampede

Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee on Friday launched a sharp attack on the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government over the Maha Kumbh stampede which killed 30 people, claiming that the BJP would have demanded President's Rule if the incident had occurred in West Bengal. Speaking to reporters in Kolkata earlier in the day, Banerjee also accused the BJP of prioritising publicity over proper management at the gathering, which is considered among the holiest Hindu pilgrimages held once every 12 years on the banks of Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj. Raising concerns over the treatment of pilgrims at the Kumbh, the Diamond Harbour MP stated that elderly devotees who visit the mela receive little attention compared to the rich and influential. Banerjee, echoing claims of other opposition parties, alleged that the government was downplaying the actual number of deaths in the Maha Kumbh stampede.
