Labour split over migrant crisis as Jeremy Corbyn describes influx as 'an opportunity'

Mass immigration is ‘nothing but a plus’ for Britain, Jeremy Corbyn said yesterday as he opened up a fresh split with his own MPs. But hours later his Shadow Home Secretary Andy Burnham warned Labour was ‘out of touch’ on immigration and called for a tougher line to win back supporters who have defected to Ukip. Jeremy Corbyn, pictured, said he would welcome hundreds of thousands of migrants from across the sea Andy Burnham pictured, warned that mass immigration has made jobs less secure for British workers Mr Corbyn, who has previously said Britain should ‘celebrate’ record levels of net migration, had failed to mention the issue in his hour-long conference speech on Tuesday. Mr Corbyn said: ‘People that have migrated to this country over many years have made an enormous contribution to our society, helped our economic growth, helped our health service and helped our social services and our education services, so don’t look upon immigration as necessarily a problem, it’s often a very great opportunity. A few hours later Mr Burnham used his speech at Labour’s conference in Brighton to admit that mass immigration has hit wages and made jobs less secure for British workers.
