The race for QB2: Logan Woodside plus 5 free-agent options

New York Times

When it came to depth at the quarterback position, the Titans were the toast of the NFL in 2019. Titans general manager Jon Robinson’s acquisition of Ryan Tannehill last offseason paid serious dividends, as we all know, when the former Miami Dolphin subbed in for an ineffective Marcus Mariota, guiding Tennessee to a 7-3 regular-season record and two playoff victories. Don’t forget 2016, either, when the Titans — still in the hunt for the playoffs — were forced to turn to Matt Cassel for the better part of their final two regular-season contests. Woodside may not have played in a regular-season game, but the Toledo alum did at least go through training camp and play in all four Titans’ preseason contests last year. But as matters stand now, here are five free-agent possibilities for the backup position: Blake Bortles — Bortles went down in flames as a starter two seasons ago in Jacksonville, but the Titans could certainly do worse than having the six-year veteran — who’s thrown for 17,649 yards and 103 touchdowns — as Plan B. He’s athletic, played on a salary of just $1 million last year in Los Angeles and learned a system that — thanks to the Sean McVay-Matt LaFleur-Arthur Smith connection — has similarities to the Titans’ scheme.
