In relief for taxpayers, deadline to file ITRs extended

The last date for individual taxpayers to file income-tax returns for assessment year 2020-21 was extended to 30 November from the usual 31 July, said finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday. Besides, the due date for filing ITR for accounts required to be audited was extended to 31 October instead of the usual 30 September. “Due dates for annual filings and compliances have been extended to account for loss of working days due to lockdown,” said Amit Maheshwari, tax partner, AKM Global, a consultancy. Income tax assesses who must get their accounts audited by chartered accountants are governed under Section 44AB of the Income tax Act, 1961.
