Column: Political novice Ysabel Jurado celebrates on her road to Eastside history
LA TimesYsabel Jurado, lower right, running for Los Angeles City Council District 14, poses for a selfie with Councilmember Nithya Raman, former L.A. City Councilmember Mike Bonin, in cap, Los Angeles City Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez, background, and others at her election night party. In the last two weeks of the campaign, the Los Angeles Police Protective League contributed $445,000 to De León’s side after Jurado quoted a song with the lyric “F— the police” in response to a question by a student, who turned out to also be a De León aide, about defunding law enforcement. “I felt if Ysabel could do something, she would, even though she wasn’t even in office,” the 38-year-old Serak said. “It’s like an extension of the family parties we used to throw every week” growing up in Highland Park, she said, gesturing around us.
