DigiYatra meets polls: NTA to conduct only entrances, not job exams

In a sweeping move to restore credibility and enhance transparency in the conduct of national entrance examinations, the Union government, under the aegis of education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, unveiled plans on December 17 to restructure the National Testing Agency. At a press conference brimming with transformative announcements, Pradhan declared that the NTA would exclusively focus on entrance tests for higher education, shelving its role in recruitment exams starting 2025. At the state level, a nodal officer, nominated by the chief secretary, will coordinate with representatives from the state police, National Informatics Centre, Intelligence Bureau and the NTA’s own representatives. It advocated limiting the number of NEET attempts to ensure fairness and efficiency, establishing a robust network of government-run computer-based testing centres, and phasing out reliance on private operators like TCS iON. The committee also recommended bolstering NTA’s staffing with permanent roles, reducing dependency on contractual hires and implementing advanced data encryption protocols to safeguard examination materials.
