Indiana redistricting plan secures suburban district for GOP
Associated PressINDIANAPOLIS — A Republican redistricting plan released Tuesday shores up a suburban Indianapolis district for the GOP while not making major changes to a potentially targeted Democratic district in northwestern Indiana. The proposal for new congressional districts under the once-a-decade redistricting process shifts the northern tier of Democratic-leaning Marion County from the 5th District now held by Republican Rep. Victora Spartz to that of Indianapolis Democratic Rep. Andre Carson. Major changes in the other congressional districts include: — The 6th District held by Republican Rep. Greg Pence would gain heavily Republican Johnson County just south of Indianapolis from Republican Rep. Trey Hollingsworth’s 9th District and the GOP-leaning southside of Indianapolis from Carson’s 7th District. Spartz campaign spokesman Tim Edson said in a statement that “Congresswoman Spartz looks forward to serving any 5th Congressional District approved by the state Legislature to benefit all Hoosiers.” __ This story has been edited to correct the first name of Indiana University political scientist Marjorie Hershey.
