Fijian workers on Pacific Labour Scheme say they were fired over workplace injuries and faced deportation
ABCSydney's winter air is completely foreign to Viliame Vuki and Atueta Daulaca as they sit braced against the cold. Key points: The Pacific Labour Scheme is administered by the Federal Government, and sees skilled workers come to Australia for up to three years The ABC has recently uncovered issues within the scheme, with workers feeling isolated and unsure who to turn to when problems arise The latest allegation involves two Fijian workers who say they were injured on the job, then fired and faced deportation They came to Australia with promises of work and a reliable wage to help support their young families left waiting in tropical Fiji. 'Not a work-related injury' In a written response to the ABC, Junee Prime Lamb said a supervisor "did notice a hole in the arch of the gumboot" Mr Vuki was wearing. "In a show of good faith, Meat Processors has negotiated their return to work at a different host employer," the company said in a statement the ABC. "If the workers have evidence that their injuries were sustained at work, we encourage them to provide this to the Pacific Labour Facility for any further action," the statement said.
