SFI State conference backs private universities under regulatory and jurisdictional government control in Kerala
The HinduThe 35th State Conference of the Students Federation of India elected M. Sivaprasad and P. S. Sanjeev as president and secretary, respectively. The State conference backed the Left Democratic Front proposal to start universities in the private sector subject to regulatory and jurisdictional oversight of the elected provincial government. The SFI also opposed the Centre’s decision to allow deemed private universities without governmental checks or balances and jurisdictional oversight at the provincial level. Per the prevalent University Grants Commission regulations, privately deemed varsity management reserves the right to deny campus political activity, the State conference’s resolution noted. Corporate commercialisation The Modi government actively pursued the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s bid to saffronise the education sector and open it to corporate commercialisation at the expense of social progress and the interests of students from marginalised sections of society and minority communities, especially those eligible for affirmative action.
