Grant Holland's story of abuse by paedophile teacher Grahame Steele is being heard after 48 years
ABCOn Monday morning, in a sleek office building in Melbourne's inner north, public hearings commenced for the Victorian government's board of inquiry into historical child sexual abuse in Beaumaris Primary School and certain other government schools. It was on just such a trip, alongside three other boys who were part of Steele's "special" group, that the course of 11-year-old Grant Holland's life drastically changed. To Holland, Steele's message was clear: "Don't say anything." According to the Board of Inquiry, Grahame Harold Steele was employed at the following Victorian government schools: 5 February 1952 to 26 May 1952 – Mirboo Primary School 17 May 1952 to 8 September 1952 – Tarraville Primary School 9 September 1952 to 28 May 1956 – Tarwin Lower Primary School 29 May 1956 to 1 February 1960 – Hampton Primary School 2 February 1960 to 31 December 1966 – Moorabbin West Primary School 1 January 1967 to 31 December 1972 – Beaumaris Primary School 1 January 1973 to 31 December 1975 – Ormond East Primary School 1 January 1976 to 31 December 1980 – Aspendale Primary School 1 January 1981 to 1 February 1982 – Beaumaris Primary School 2 February 1982 to 31 January 1990 – Belvedere Park Primary School In submitting to the Beaumaris Inquiry, Holland says those bloody feelings finally found the right outlet. "It's not just Beaumaris and Ormond East, and they know that," Holland says.
