Rebel Nationals wanting new coal-fired power stations face battle with Liberals and markets

ABC

Frustrated and dangerous, a group of rebel Nationals is threatening to destabilise the party's leader and hold the Morrison Government's energy policy hostage. He and his band of disaffected allies are now publicly arguing against climate change policies and in favour of new coal-fired power stations across the country. In a win for Nationals like Senator Canavan, the Federal Government recently announced more than $4 million for a feasibility study into a "high-efficiency, low-emissions" coal-fired power station at Collinsville, south of Townsville. As it stands, Australia has about 20 coal-fired power stations scattered across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. It is against this complex backdrop that the Nationals are pushing for a seemingly simple solution: new coal-fired power stations.
