What are remote labs and how they operate?
When Covid-19 hit the world, the education sector was heavily disrupted along several fronts. In this mode, students perform their course labs by accessing real-world electronic components and equipment located in the teaching institution from anywhere in the world. RASPBERRY PI A LINUX-BASED MICROCOMPUTER To move such a course online, the experiments needed redesign, such that students are able to remotely access actual sensors and work with them. Test benches were set up in the labs at IIT Mandi, which could be accessed by students situated across India using a combination of remote-control access on the Pi, Google meets, and live webcam feeds. TEACHING THROUGH HYBRID MODE With this setup, teaching in a hybrid mode also became possible, i.e., students who were available in person could also do the experiments and interact with their remote teammates.
