New COVID-19 subvariants triggering 'fourth wave' in Tasmania, health experts warn

With daily new COVID-19 case numbers up near 2,000 again, Tasmanians could be forgiven for thinking they were back in March when the BA.2 strain of Omicron was beginning to run rampant through the state. Tasmania yesterday recorded 1,700 new cases, taking the total number of active cases to 8,201, with the public health director stating the island is in the middle of a "fourth wave" of infections. Tasmania's Director of Public Health Mark Veitch said case numbers are "definitely high", likening the situation to the BA.2 Omicron wave in March. "We can expect relatively high case numbers for the next at least month or so, so we are into the substantial wave of infection," he said on Wednesday. Dr Veitch said although Tasmania does have relatively high case numbers per capita, the ACT is "around the same or higher, and they didn't have Dark Mofo or Festival of Voices".
