Why Labour should forget about fining patients for missed appointments

How do you solve a problem like missed NHS appointments? Asked whether he would consider this measure, Wes Streeting told Times Radio: “At this stage, it’s not something I’m looking at doing, but once we’ve got the system working effectively, if we still have this problem of missed appointments then I might be more open-minded.” The Telegraph understands the policy could feature in the Government’s 10-year health plan next spring. This isn’t to say missed appointments aren’t a serious issue for the health service – they are. The NHS Confederation, which represents the whole healthcare system, pointed out last year that if we assume NHS England would use similar eligibility criteria for no-show fines as they do for prescription charges, only 40 per cent of the population would actually face the penalty anyway. Once valid reasons for missed appointments were factored in – such as failure to receive the appointment letter, or public transport issues – the sum the NHS would make from this charge would decrease even more.
