Miguel Almiron is Newcastle’s Mr Versatile but it’s still unclear where he fits in this side

This Newcastle United team has never been settled throughout Steve Bruce’s tenure. The graphic below shows Newcastle’s formation against Arsenal, when Almiron, played on the left-hand side of a midfield three. “With what we’ve got at the top end of the pitch, I believe he’s still a very, very decent midfield player and can add goals and a bit of flair from it like he has done.” Clearly Bruce wants to fit Almiron somewhere into his team, given that Jonjo Shelvey is the only outfield player to enjoy greater game time this season than the 27-year-old’s 2,090 minutes, but the forward justifiably finds himself third in line for an attacking berth. As impressive as Almiron was when he was playing as a false nine, or as a No 10 following Project Restart last year, both Callum Wilson, Newcastle’s only natural goalscorer, and Allan Saint-Maximin, the side’s talisman, must be accommodated ahead of the Paraguayan. Bruce has previously said that Almiron’s “best position” is as a No 10, but he is not currently the best option to play there.
