Design of new Glasgow prison unfinished as SNP prepares to free inmates to ease overcrowding
The TelegraphScotland’s justice secretary has admitted designs for a replacement to the country’s largest jail remain unfinished despite her move to order a mass release of prisoners to ease overcrowding. Angela Constance said plans for a new prison in Glasgow, to replace the Victorian-era HMP Barlinnie, would be available this summer and that she hoped construction contracts would be signed by the end of the year. The SNP MSP on Thursday revealed that she wanted to release up to 500 criminals, including violent offenders, under emergency measures after the prison population swelled to record levels. Victims’ groups have said they are “extremely concerned” at the proposals, which would see hundreds of inmates serving sentences of four years or less set free early.
