Nagelsmann’s smart use of Gross and Havertz shows Germany there is life after Kroos

Two months after their European Championship ended with a punch to the gut, Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany reappeared with a powerful performance in the Nations League. His signature delivery — the long, driven switch of play that invariably found a team-mate in stride — gave Nagelsmann’s team an important dynamic, enabling them to draw opponents towards one side of the pitch before exploiting overloads on the other flank. Gross, 33, has not had Kroos’ career but is not dissimilar in profile and was used in much the same way — albeit with compelling differences. Across his career — at Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich or now with Germany — he has often adapted, adjusting his teams around different opposition, tinkering with shapes, formations, and speed and systems of attack.
