Carrying gold back from the gulf a ‘typical problem’ of Kerala: Supreme Court
The HinduThe Supreme Court on Monday termed the bringing of gold from gulf countries to Kerala a “typical problem”, probably unique, to the State. A Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyyan was hearing a petition filed by the Union government against a Kerala High Court decision of April 2024 which upset a detention order under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974 passed on a man caught travelling back to Kerala with a few lakhs worth of Dirhams. The court’s oral observations were triggered after Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the government, said there was a previous case of gold smuggling against the man, Siraj. “This is a typical problem relating to Kerala… There are numerous cases of bringing gold… People go, earn in Dirhams, buy gold and come back,” Justice Kant remarked orally.
