Why 93,000 Bihar school teachers must prove eligibility or face termination

A sword of uncertainty hangs over 93,000 elementary school teachers in Bihar. In December 2015, hearing a PIL, the Patna High Court ordered the State Vigilance Bureau to verify the academic credentials and other eligibility certificates of the teachers. While the vigilance department went about verifying documents, these 93,000 teachers failed to submit their credentials for over four years, disregarding repeated orders issued by the authorities. Education department officials believe many among these 93,000 teachers could be continuing on the job on the basis of fake certificates. In case of appointments of elementary teachers, which are to be made by the panchayat bodies, the education department will also monitor the recruitment process without diluting the role of panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies.
