Dear Prudence is Slate’s advice column. Every time they’ve mentioned wanting a vacation, my husband has said, “You should go to its great!” And they chuckled at our love for this small town. I’m not sure that when you call this lake spot “your special place” it makes it clear to anyone else that you don’t want them to spend significant time there. Or you’d like to brainstorm some other arrangement with your husband that will give you two privacy and quiet time in the place you love, without having to share all that time with your in-laws. I still don’t sound “local” in my new state, and people often ask me where I’m from in small talk.
