After the death of a renowned queen, life in London goes on

Associated Press

LONDON — On morning television, the moment was singularly somber — the departure of the hearse bearing the flag-draped coffin of Queen Elizabeth II. “I don’t think the Queen would want us to sit at home mourning,” said Natalie McGinn, a 36-year-old business consultant, meeting a friend outside the arena’s Hobbs Gate. “The queen was more distant.” In the week after Diana’s death, a population known for keeping a stiff upper lip grieved in the most public settings. “It’s a bit like religion,” Tse said of the public’s relationship to the queen and her family. “I mean, she doesn’t affect me,” he said, “apart from being on a banknote.” ___ AP National Writer Adam Geller is on assignment in London covering the queen’s death.
