Three men who kidnapped, tortured and tried to extort millions of dollars from a Chinese businessman have been jailed, with a WA judge describing their crime as "hardly the work of criminal masterminds". Throughout the ordeal, the man was made to repeatedly contact a family member to demand that up to $3 million be transferred into an account linked to the men — Cheng Xin, 30, Zahoe Ge 59, and Te Putu Tonga Patara Te Tuhi Hawkings, 33. The family member, who initially thought the man was in China, contacted police on the east coast where he lived, and eventually the messages were traced to a property in Caversham in Perth's north-east. Crude extortion attempt On Friday, Judge John Staude described the victim's ordeal as terrifying, saying the man genuinely believed he was going to be killed.
