U.S. group to submit 1984 riots report to UN
The Sikh rights group that filed lawsuits against the Congress party, its president Sonia Gandhi, and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced that on November 7 it will mark the 30th anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh pogrom by submitting to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon a report on what it describes as “genocidal violence” against the community. In a statement, Sikhs for Justice said that the report titled “1984 Sikh Genocide” will carry details of the “pre-planned and deliberate killings of the Sikh community in 19 States of India, eyewash investigations by the successive governments, zero convictions and the failure of the Supreme Court to take cognisance of thousands of deaths during the first week of November 1984.” Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the attorney, who represented SFJ in these lawsuits, also filed the complaint against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to the U.S. on behalf of victims of the 2002 anti-Muslim pogrom in Gujarat, leading to the issuance of a summons against Mr. Modi by a New York federal court. This week SFJ said that on the day that it planned to submit its report to Mr. Ban, “thousands of Sikhs from North America and European Union will be converging at United Nations headquarters to highlight the denial of justice and continuous impunity to Indian political leaders involved in the 1984 genocidal violence.” In a message to The Hindu, Mr. Pannun said that the Central Bureau of Investigation had not filed any new cases against former minister and Congress leader Jagdish Tytler “even though credible witnesses are here in the U.S.”
