The Theosophical Society, established in 1875, is a unique and sprawling complex in the heart of Madras. It houses various religious shrines, a library, and a sprawling lung space. The society was started by Madame H.P. Blavatsky and Colonel H.S. Olcott and has undergone significant expansion over the years. The Adyar Library, one of the largest collections in India, is a central part of the society. The society also accommodates a temple, a Zoroastrian temple, a Buddhist vihara, a chapel, and a mosque.
