Laken Riley: How a gruesome attack changed this running trail

CNN

Athens, Georgia CNN — The five pairs of sneakers resting in front of a popular wooded trail serve as a daily reminder of the run Laken Riley never finished. “I became really vigilant.” UGA juniors Victoria Kota and Will Brenneman enjoy visiting Oconee Forest Park near Lake Herrick, but they say the tragedy of Laken Riley's death has affected the entire UGA community. Holly Yan/CNN UGA graduate Calvin Pettyjohn said he might not be “a target demographic of that type of violence” Riley suffered. “I think something like this allows us to be able to realize the world that we’re walking in sometimes is, you know, not always a secure one.” Laken Riley's body was found in the woods that cover most of Oconee Forest Park's 60 acres. Even after the trail reopened, “I didn’t come out here for about another week or week and a half … just to, you know, kind of give it some space.” UGA graduate Calvin Pettyjohn walks through Oconee Forest Park several times a week to clear his mind.
