How supermarkets rose to coronavirus challenge

The Telegraph

A couple of weeks ago, when finding a lone packet of spaghetti felt like a small victory, Tesco’s chief executive asked head office staff to go into stores and help stack empty shelves if they could. Having enough staff to deal with the deluge of panicked shoppers descending into stores to fill their cupboards, as the country went into lockdown, was the first thing the major supermarkets acted on. To improve availability the grocers restricted the number of items customers could buy at any time and they cut back on product ranges to boost their volumes. “We’ll likely continue to see an improvement in stock levels over the forthcoming week,” said Chris Elliott, a manager at data business Ascential.
