How architecture shapes your identity and affects your brain

"There's something about a 150-foot ceiling that makes a man a different kind of man," remarked 20th century architect Louis Kahn, when he visited the Roman Baths of Caracalla. "What's profound about embodied cognition is it's not just about a category of thoughts — it really describes all of the ways in which we think," Ms Goldhagen says. "If the built environment isn't supporting you, then the chances are it's probably hurting you," Ms Goldhagen says. Seeing the built environment as a continuous entity Ms Goldhagen says architects need to get better at explaining why design matters. "Workers in a workplace will increase their productivity by 25 per cent if we give natural light during the day — that's an argument," she says.
