Margaret River tourist region businesses say Airbnb incentives don't go far enough to ease staffing crisis

Hospitality vendors in WA's South West say a chronic shortage of staff accommodation is crippling their businesses and new government initiatives to try to solve the problem are inadequate. Key points: The government will give $10,000 to Airbnb owners who rent their properties longer term Weekly rent would be capped at $800 for Perth and $650 in the South West Business owners say they cannot attract staff because of the chronic housing shortage Steve Tippett owns Studio Bistro in Yallingup, one of the state's premier tourism regions, and said he's losing staff — and failing to attract replacements — because they've got nowhere to live. A $10,000 payment to owners of Airbnb properties who make their accommodation available for longer term rentals is being offered by the WA government in an effort to ease the rental shortage across the state. Michael Crosby, Airbnb's head of policy for Australia and New Zealand, said he hoped the changes, in particular the cap on short-stay use before needing local government approval, did not adversely impact property owners.
