Why Latin Church-backed protest against Adani port project in Vizhinjam is escalating
India TodayNovember 27 marked a new flashpoint in the 134-day-old agitation by the Latin Catholic Church-backed fishing communities against the Rs 7,525 crore international sea port project at Vizhinjam in Thiruvananthapuram when over 2,500 protesters allegedly vandalised the local police station and thrashed 27 police personnel, three of them seriously. The incident has escalated tensions over the project that Kerala’s Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government bills as a major infrastructure development initiative, besides the contentious K-Rail project which promises to connect the state capital with Kasaragod and significantly reduce travel time between Kerala’s north and south. Police say some protesters had, on November 26, targeted vehicles and trucks entering the port construction site with building material, prompting the arrest of four persons. The next day, police say, around 600 protesters, including women, surrounded the Vizhinjam police station and demanded the release of those arrested.
