HC acquits two persons convicted in honour killing case in Kasaragod
The HinduA Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Wednesday set aside the Ernakulam Central Bureau of Investigation Special Court’s verdict awarding life imprisonment to Muhammad Iqbal and Mohammed Haneefa, the first and second accused respectively in a case relating to an honour killing in Kasaragod. The prosecution case is that Balakrishnan, a Youth Congress activist, was stabbed inside a car by the convicts and murdered in 2001 on a public road near Kuhiyudeen Masjit, Pulikunnu, Kasaragod. The murder of the Congress activist took place three months after his marriage with the daughter of Abdul Gafoor, who opposed their marriage as he felt that it had brought dishonour to his family and community. Balakrishnan observed that the special court had not properly appreciated the evidence on record and had arrived at a wrong conclusion of the guilt of the accused.
