Inequalities that mean students on free school meals were less than half as likely to achieve a top grade at GCSE as their peers. Their failure to act quickly to get laptops or free school meal vouchers to kids who needed them, to get a plan in place for exams in 2020 and 2021, or to put in place the Covid security measures, like ventilation systems, to keep children learning in school, shows not just incompetence but a callous disregard for children’s futures. That’s why we’ve set out a bold recovery plan which would provide new opportunities for every child and young person to learn, socialise and develop.
