The daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney, Ms Cheney was the only Republican present at the House of Representatives floor on the one-year anniversary to commemorate the riot. Other Republicans who voted to impeach Mr Trump – such as representatives John Katko of New York and Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio – announced they would not seek reelection and likely would have faced right-wing challengers. Representative Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, who also voted to impeach Mr Trump and is the only other Republican to sit on the January 6 select committee, announced he would not seek reelection after Illinois’ new congressional map would have put him in a member-on-member primary.
