Political divide over CAA widens as Bengal assembly passes resolution
Live MintWest Bengal on Monday became the fourth Opposition-ruled state to pass a resolution rejecting the Citizenship Act, or CAA, which was passed by Parliament. The resolution of the Trinamool Congress government, spearheaded by the party’s chairperson and chief minister Mamata Banerjee, comes just four days ahead of the budget session of Parliament and widens the political divide on the country over the legislation. The Parliament session is expected to be a stormy affair with the Opposition parties taking on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party -led National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre over CAA. Later on Monday evening, senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra led a party delegation and moved the National Human Rights Commission demanding action against alleged police atrocities on anti-CAA protesters during protests in Uttar Pradesh.
