EAM Jaishankar on Indian immigrants deported from US: Centre to take action against human traffickers

U.S. deportation of Indian migrants: Centre to take action against human traffickers, says Jaishankar Amid protests from the Opposition members over the way undocumented Indian nationals were handcuffed and chained by the U.S. while deporting them to India, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday informed the Parliament that the deportation of illegal migrants was not a new development, and the use of restraints on the deportees was a “standard operating procedure”. The External Affairs Minister made the statement as both Houses witnessed an uproar over the treatment meted out to 104 illegal Indian immigrants who landed in Amritsar on Wednesday on a U.S. military plane. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha first, Mr. Jaishankar said a total of 15,756 illegal Indian immigrants have been deported to India from the U.S. since 2009. Kharge said, adding,”.why did we not send our own planes to bring back the Indians with dignity and respect, instead of a military plane landing on our soil?” The External Affairs Minister said deportations by the U.S. were executed by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities, and “the standard operating procedure for deportations by aircraft used by ICE that is effective from 2012, provides for the use of restraints”.
