Blazers vs. Suns: Two friends, one surprise shot and one case of bragging rights

New York Times

PORTLAND, Ore. —To understand the story within the story in Friday’s crazy, drama-filled overtime game in Portland, you have to realize the friendship between Trail Blazers’ guard Anfernee Simons and Suns’ wing Mikal Bridges. So when the final buzzer sounded — which came after Phoenix big man Jock Landale missed a close-range shot after rebounding Deandre Ayton’s intentionally missed free throw — Simons sought out Bridges. Bridges said during their postgame exchange he was essentially asking Simons ‘What the hell was that?’ “Exactly; 100 percent,” Bridges said. “But we are going to see each other a lot, both being in the Western Conference … so I’m sure is going to be trying to get his lick back next time we see them.” For now, though, Bridges is left wondering where that shot came from, and how in the world did Simons have the guts to unveil it from there, at that moment. “Oh, I’m definitely going to bring it up in the summertime,” Simons said.
