Is it legal to flash headlights to warn other drivers of speed cameras? Police explain rules and penalties

ABC

A flash of headlights to warn oncoming traffic of police or a speed camera can be a common sight on Australian roads. Senior Sergeant Correia said there was no specific rule about warning other drivers of a speed camera but there were rules around flashing lights. Senior Sergeant Correia said if a driver was alerting another driver to a speed camera they could be fined for incorrectly using their headlights. However, Senior Sergeant Correia said police considered the context of why a driver might flash their vehicle's headlights at another driver. 'Common sense' approach Most state and territories do not have specific laws on flashing headlights but a common law is drivers are not permitted to use high beam headlights within 200 metres of another vehicle.
